The Didactic method of teaching can be explained by the presentation of basic components of education to students. This is also referred to as direct instruction and is highly teacher driven. This usually involves teaching face to face, in a small group setting which involves a teacher and student learning via listening and doing. There is opposition to this learning theory as it assumes an active teacher and passive students which is seen to encourage the inhibition of student development by making them dependent on the teacher and not encouraging independent problem solving.
Research shows that teaching is moving away from didacticism to self-learning facilitation and with this the need for teachers to engage in different roles and techniques (Griffin, 2002, Jarvis, 2002). With advancements in technology, didactic as a training method is evolving into e-learning to combat restrictions or heavy demands on facilitator and resources to deliver. The transfer of learning from the classic classroom to the e-learning environment need to be implemented with a critical approach. An important step following the implementation of a program, regardless of delivery method, ensure that careful evaluation is taken at various points to ensure that delivery, content and competency are achieved efficiently.
